I've used a Trek 7700 Multitrack for the past 13 years as a commuting and recreational vehicle. It's been a great bike, but the weight and the front suspension conspired to restrict the distance that I could ride to about 50-75 miles. I was therefore looking for an alternative that addressed the weight and suspension issues, yet would be rugged enough to stand up to the rigors of urban riding. The Diverge Expert Carbon nails these objectives and then some. I've accumulated a mere 60+ miles on the machine, so consider this a preliminary review. The ride is smooth and easily controlled. The reduced weight, coupled with the improved efficiency introduced by not having a front suspension result in a machine that flattens moderate hills, while allowing the rider to maintain a comfortable cadence on steep, long grinds. On the flat, I can maintain a speed of 18 miles per hour without difficulty, in contrast to the 14 miles per hour I had become accustomed to with my Trek. The hydraulic disc brakes are noting short of amazing in terms of stopping power and responsiveness, providing a degree of modulation that I have never experienced before. The Shimano Ultegra component set shifts responsively and confidently. This was important to me, as I had become accustomed to the top-notch performance of the Shimano Deore component set on my Trek, and was unwilling to step down from this level of performance. My only complaint is that Specialized did not include the customary pair of lugs at the sides of the seat stays that accommodate attachment of rack stays. To address this, I designed and fabricated a rack stay that attaches to the frame at the crotch formed by the intersection of the seat stays. It works well; it was just annoying to have to do. It is also a bit perplexing that Specialized does not specify a torque value for the rear axle, unlike they do for the front (12 Nm). I've adopted this value for the rear and it seems to work fine. In sum, this bicycle embodies everything I was looking for in a model that would stand up to the rigors of urban commuting, yet make it possible for me to do the occasional century ride. It's sensational.
Excellent all around bicycle. Does just about anything that you can ask of a bike. Great on unpaved surfaces, gravel and paved roads. It's not really a racing bike, but I got it up to pretty good speeds on the flats. The addition of disk brakes makes what is a really good bike, into a fantastic bicycle, capable in just about any situation. If you can afford it - my recommendation is to buy it. These things are in short supply, as it appears that Specialized may have been caught off guard regarding the demand for this type of bicycle. So if you can find one - buy it. It really is the bicycle of my youth, that I could take just about anywhere and have a lot of fun doing it. I'm 57 years old and have ridden a lot of bikes, but this one is the best one ever... I can't race anymore... but I still love to bike.
