Recommended Equipment To help our customers prepare for longer and better rides, we have provided a list of recommended gear below – for both the bike and the rider!  Many items on this list also make great gifts for family and friends.

TIP:  Print out this page, bring it into Landry's store, and use it as a handy shopping list!

FOR THE BIKE:

Water bottles and cages (or Camelbak hydration system) – it's really important to drink lots of fluids on more strenuous, long-distance rides.

Bike lock – to secure your bike during lunch breaks or overnight stops on longer trips.

Basic toolbag
– seat bag, spare tubes, tire levers & patch kit – in case of flats.

Frame pump
– in case of a flat while riding.

Portable toolkit
– to make minor adjustments on the ride. Even if you don’t know how to adjust a bike, other riders can help if you carry the right tools.

Lubricant
– for better performance and longer wear. (We recommend Boeshield T-9 lubricant, which is specially formulated for bicycles.)

Rear luggage rack
– to carry panniers, extra clothes, raingear, etc.

Panniers
– mounted bags to carry clothing & other gear while riding.

Comfort saddle
– more cushion & comfort where it really counts!

Suspension seatpost
– even more cushion!

Clipless pedals
– for cycling efficiency.

Cycling computer
– to track your mileage on cue sheets, to gauge speed and distance on the ride (also good for training before the big event).

Rear-view mirror
– really helpful when you're riding with hundreds of other cyclists.

Lighting system
– necessary for riding at night.

Road tires
– replacement tires for fatter hybrid/mtn tires.

Car rack
– to transport your bike to training rides and other events.

FOR THE RIDER:

Helmet – important for protecting your head in case of a crash.  Note that newer-style helmets are lighter-weight, more comfortable, and better ventilated.

Bicycle maps and local bike-touring books
– to discover new places to ride (good for event training).

High-performance bike clothing
– synthetic fibers for moisture wicking, temperature control, and overall body comfort.

Padded shorts and/or padded underwear
– padded bike shorts really make a difference on long-distance rides! Note that we carry both Lycra and baggy bike shorts.

Padded cycling gloves
– to get a better grip on the bike, avoid numbness of the hands on long rides, and also to protect your palms if you accidentally fall.

Cycling shoes
– for better pedaling efficiency and to avoid numbness in the feet. And cycling socks provide moisture control and comfort.

Protective eyewear
– to shield your eyes from the sun, insects, and tree branches.

Rain gear
– in case of rainy weather on your bike trip.

Camelbak hydration system
– convenient and comfortable alternative to water bottles.
